With specialized research interests in the social world of early Christianity, Dennis E. Smith is a recognized authority on ancient Greco-Roman meal customs. He has maintained throughout his career an active research interest in various aspects of the study of Christian origins.
Smith has served in a number of leadership roles at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature: as steering committee member of the Social History of Formative Christianity and Judaism Section, as member of the Seminar on Ancient Myths and Modern Theories of Christian Origins, and as co-chair of the Seminar on Meals in the Greco-Roman World. At the Westar Institute, he was a Charter Fellow of the Jesus Seminar and currently serves as chair of the Acts Seminar and as a member of the Steering Committee of the Jesus Seminar on Christian Origins. He has served as guest editor for Forum and was on the editorial board of The Fourth R.
In addition to the books listed below, he has published numerous articles and book reviews in scholarly journals. He is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
