Reframing Christian Scriptures

How Newly Discovered Texts Open up the Past and Future

September 18–19, 2015
Naperville, Illinois

The last 150 years have witnessed a wide range of exciting new discoveries of early Christian literature not included in the New Testament. It is now clear that, at the outset, a
wide range of often competing documents—texts that cannot be best assessed using the categories of orthodoxy and heresy, biblical or non-biblical—vied for attention. The Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Mary (Magdalene), Gospel of Truth, Thunder: Perfect Mind, Acts of Thecla, Letter of Peter to Philip, the Secret Revelation of John and many others have begun to reshape how the beginnings of Christianity are conceived. This Jesus Seminar on the Road examines the ways in which a more diverse set of Christian scriptures changes the way we understand Christian beginnings.

Carly Daniel-Hughes (Th.D., Harvard Divinity School) is an Associate Professor of Religion at Concordia University (Montréal). She is the author of The Salvation of the Flesh in Tertullian of Carthage: Dressing for the Resurrection (2011) and co-editor of Dressing Judeans and Christians in Antiquity (2014).

Hal Taussig (Ph.D., The Union Institute) is Visiting Professor of New Testament at Union Theological Seminary, NYC, Professor of Early Christianity at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia, and co-pastor at the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. His books include A New New Testament (2013), The Thunder: Perfect Mind (2009), and A New Spiritual Home (2006).
