Robert W. (Bob) Funk (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) retired from the University of Montana in 1986 to found the Westar Institute. Westar’s first project, the Jesus Seminar. A distinguished teacher, writer, translator and publisher in the field of religious studies, Bob was a Guggenheim Fellow and Senior Fulbright Scholar. He served as Annual Professor of the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, as chair of the Graduate Department of Religion at Vanderbilt University, and as Executive Secretary of the Society of Biblical Literature, the learned society of bible scholars. His many books include The Five Gospels (1993) and The Acts of Jesus (1998), both with the Jesus Seminar, and Honest to Jesus (1996), as well as two Greek grammars.
Westar Institute fosters collaborative, cumulative research in religious studies and communicates the results of the scholarship to a broad, non-specialist public.
