To assist participants in preparing to appreciate the Fall Christianity Seminar II session on “Staging Households,” we will look at The Shepherd of Hermas, a long but popular text among early Christ groups.

A combination of short lectures and discussion of intriguing passages from this document will introduce lines of inquiry for the Fall seminar around “the household as a stage on which emergent Christianity was performed.”

Written by a freedman, The Shepherd of Hermas offers abundant material about household forms androles. We will consider passages from the work that offer insights into the internal experience of a formerly enslaved man who became a head of household connected with early Christ groups at Rome.

We will explore what the document reveals about the internal stage on which a formerly enslaved Christ follower performs what would become identified as Christian virtues for his chosen master, God.
