Biography

Merrill Hawkins is Professor of Religion at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee. He is a historian of Christianity, with current research interests in the presence of the Social Gospel in the American South. He has taught widely in the undergraduate religion curriculum since 1995, including general education surveys of the New Testament and the Hebrew Bible, Baptist Studies, American religion, and history of Christianity. Presently, in addition to teaching multiple sections of REL 101/Survey of the Old Testament, he teaches upper division religion courses in the human emotions, including love, grief, and anger. He also teaches one course per year on spirituality in Carson-Newman’s graduate counseling program, recently accredited by CACREP.
