Karen Armstrong
What Is Religion?

1 audio CD, 80 minutes, $12.50

Until recently, religion was not about thinking things. It was, rather, about behaving in a way that changed participants at a profound level. Compassion and the Golden Rule were the primary religious categories and any form of violence ~ even unkind speech or impatient gestures ~ were fundamentally unreligious. Karen Armstrong explores the nature of the religious quest in all the major traditions, east and west, and examines the peripheral role of metaphysics and dogma, which has been a peculiar preoccupation of Western Christianity.

Karen Armstrong is the author of numerous books, including the international best seller, A History of God. She is also the author of three television documentaries and the recipient, in 1999, of the Muslim Public Affairs Council's Media Award. Her new book, The Bible: The Biography, was published in March 2008.

Marcus J. Borg
The Study of Jesus and Christian Adult
Theological Re-Education Today

1 audio CD, 80 minutes, $12.50

The scholarly study of Jesus provides a rich opportunity to do adult theological re-education in this time of change and conflict in the churches of North America.  It can lead to a rediscovery of how to read the gospels and the Bible in a persuasive and compelling way, how to think of the character and passion of God, and what it means for American Christians today to follow Jesus ~ to participate in his passion.

Marcus J. Borg is Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University. He is the author of many books, including Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, the best-selling book by a contemporary Jesus scholar, The God We Never Knew, named as one of "ten best books in religion for 1997,” and most recently Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary (2006).

Ann Graham Brock
That “Other” Gospel
Looking at Jesus through John's Eyes

1 audio CD, 80 minutes, $12.50

Many have called John the "spiritual gospel" for its depiction of Jesus. By comparing and contrasting the Gospel of John to the other gospels, we can perceive a unique portrayal of Jesus that would otherwise have been lost to us. Such a comparison affords us special insights into Jesus' ministry and that of the early Christian communities. Ann Brock examines the distinctive aspects of John's portrait of Jesus for what it tells us and for what it leaves unspoken.

Ann Graham Brock is the author of Mary Magdalene, the First Apostle (2003). A veteran of numerous documentaries, including the History Channel's presentation of The Twelve Apostles, the Discovery Channel's The Real Da Vinci Code as well as several productions for the BBC, and the recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award at Harvard University, she is Associate Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Iliff School of Theology.

Amy-Jill Levine
The Historical Jesus
Is He “Good for the Jews”?

1 audio CD, 80 minutes, $12.50

The reconstructions of "Judaism" offered by many historical Jesus studies and filtered down through Christian ministers to Christian laity have, ironically, created a new generation of anti-Jewish stereotypes and attitudes. How did this situation happen, and what might those dedicated to understanding Jesus in his original context do to correct it?

Amy-Jill Levine is E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. A self-described Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches Christians about Jesus in the buckle of the Bible Belt, her most recent books are The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus (2006) and The Historical Jesus in Context (2006) with John Dominic Crossan and Dale C. Allison, Jr.

Milton C. Moreland
Raiding the Tomb of Jesus
Biblical Archaeology, Conspiracy Theories, and the Consequences for Faith

1 audio CD, 80 minutes, $12.50

In this age of TV documentaries, archaeologists and filmmakers are the new priests and artifacts are the new relics. Do recent discoveries like the James Ossuary and the Jesus family tomb destroy or vindicate the proverbial pillars of Christianity? Milton Moreland looks at the way archaeologists, filmmakers, looters, forgers, journalists, and theologians fight each other for the opportunity to discover, interpret, and sensationalize artifacts for the religious and irreligious alike.

Milton C. Moreland is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and co-director of the Program in Archaeology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.  He is the Archaeology Senior Staff & Area Supervisor for the ongoing excavation at Sepphoris in Galilee. His publications include articles on Roman period Galilee and Jerusalem and two edited books on the sayings of Jesus.

John Shelby Spong
Locating the Oral Tradition in the Synagogue

1 audio CD, 80 minutes, $12.50

It is clearly established that a period of forty to seventy years stood between the life of Jesus and the writing of the four canonical gospels.  What is not so clearly established is the context of that oral period and a concept of how that context shaped the gospel message.  John Shelby Spong explores that oral period.

John Shelby Spong is the retired Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey. A frequent lecturer at conference centers and on college campuses, he is the author of numerous bestselling books, including Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, Born of a Woman, Living in Sin, and Resurrection: Myth or Reality. His most recent book, Jesus for the Non-Religious, was published in 2007.
