Joe Bessler-Northcutt
From Private Faith to Public Responsibility

Traditionally scholars have kept their doubts about traditional faith claims to themselves and have circulated scholarship critical of these claims only very narrowly. The discourse fostered by the Westar Institute and the Jesus Seminar has changed everything by moving the scholarly conversation into an open and public forum. And this, in turn, has had the effect of restoring Jesus to the status of a genuine public figure. Joe Bessler-Northcutt will trace these developments and examine their effect on contemporary theology.

Daryl D. Schmidt
Getting Jesus Out of the Bible

The Bible is both the primary source and the principal obstacle in the quest of the historical Jesus. The historian's task begins by listening carefully to four distinct gospel narratives, each telling a different story. The historian then has to add newly discovered gospels, fragmentary pieces from Greek papyri, and echoes preserved from ancient orality. To construct a profile of the historical Jesus from these sources, the historian must fashion critical tools to distinguish the features of Jesus as he was remembered by his early followers.

Mike Short
Dick and Jane Join Westar

How did a minister and his wife evolve out of the Christian church and become active advocates for religious literacy? Mike will share how he and his wife Linda journeyed from orthodoxy to an understanding of the historical Jesus, meeting some wonderful people along the way. He will include a commentary on the new Westar Leaders Seminar and its approach to innovation in ministry, faith communities and the Sunday morning experience.

Mike Short retired from science education after teaching chemistry and physics for 31 years. He has served as a minister for over 25 years for churches in several denominations.

Paul Alan Laughlin
Putting the Historical Jesus in His Place

A current and compelling theory of the evolution of human consciousness recognizes not just two axial ages, but seven historical stages, and further maintains that we are on the cusp of an eighth that promises a dramatic leap to a whole new level of awareness. Viewed in light of this theory, the past work of the Jesus Seminar and the historical Jesus that it has recovered gain more clarity and significance, and the future task of Westar Institute in reshaping the Christian faith for the twenty-first century becomes more sharply defined and urgent.

Arthur J. Dewey
Campfires in the Vineyard

What happens when you catch the Empire of God out of the corner of your eye, when you spend time rubbing the fragmentary words of the historical Jesus together? Arthur Dewey argues that members of the Jesus Seminar, both Fellows and Associates, have become complicit with the historical Jesus in constructing new habitats of the imagination. He asks if the Seminar is on a collision course with those forces in society that would silence critical voices and if it will join with other pockets of resistance that reject the command systems of the age?

Andrew D. Scrimgeour
The Quest for the Real Jesus Seminar

From its inception the Jesus Seminar has captured the attention of journalists, scholars, clergy, and the public. Few scholarly endeavors in the field of religion have received such sustained public scrutiny. Sorting through twenty years of press clippings, editorials, cartoons, magazine stories, interviews, correspondence, scholarly articles, academic conferences, library holdings, bookstore inventories, and the required reading lists of college and seminary courses, Andrew Scrimgeour teases out a wide range of perceptions of the Jesus Seminar.
