John Staten is known now for his current double career as Theologian-in-Residence for the Presbytery of the Redwoods (Northern California) and Vintner/Owner of Field Stone Winery & Vineyard in Sonoma County CA. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he was a former professor and chair of the Religion Department at Reed College in Portland, professor and chaplain of the Religion Department at Mills College in Oakland, adjunct professor in theology at San Francisco Theological Seminary (GTU), and founder and instructor of the San Francisco Lay Center for Theological Studies. He has a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Chicago, Divinity School where he studied with his mentors, Langdon Gilkey and Paul Ricoeur. He earned an A.B. in History from Stanford University and a B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary with a major in biblical studies. Along with articles in the area of the knowledge of God, Staten is the author of Conscience and the Reality of God: An Essay on the Experiential Foundations of Religious Knowledge, vol. 36 of the international series Religion and Reason.
