Kathleen E. Corley & Robert J. Miller

Women &
the Historical Jesus

LECTURE

Was Jesus a Feminist?

Jesus scandalized his contemporaries by openly associating with unchaperoned women in his movement.  This lecture will explore what attracted these women and what their presence among Jesus' disciples tells us about the historical Jesus.

FRIDAY EVENING, 7:30–9 P.M

WORKSHOPS

Women and the Historical Jesus

The gospels give us evidence that women of various social levels were inspired by Jesus' teaching and example.  This session explores what these women saw in Jesus, how women came to play important roles in his movement, and how their experiences compare to women's opportunities in other ancient religions, especially Judaism.

  SATURDAY MORNING,  9:30 A.M.–NOON

Women and Authority in Early Christianity

Early Christianity reflects a fascinating diversity in its understanding of the place of women in the church and family, from radical experiments in gender equality to strict male dominance.  This session investigates the conflicting teachings of the New Testament on this issue and explores what is at stake ethically and theologically in the struggles over gender roles in today's churches.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON, 1:30–4 P.M.

Kathleen E.Corley is the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Professor of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. A member of the Steering Committee of the Historical Jesus Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, she is the author of Private Women, Public Meals (1993) and Women and the Historical Jesus (2002).

Robert J. Miller resigned from college teaching and is developing adult education materials for the critical study of the Bible.  Dr. Miller served as Scholar-in-Residence at Westar Institute for 2001.  His books include The Complete Gospels (1995),  The Jesus Seminar and Its Critics (1999) and Born Divine (November 2002).
