The Jesus of the First Century
What do we now know about the historical Jesus? In this workshop we will examine selected sayings of Jesus, showing why scholars consider them authentic and suggesting surprising ways they might have been understood. We will also consider how one may use the evidence of Jesus' authentic sayings to construct a profile of Jesus as a figure of history.

The Jesus of the Twenty-first Century
What does the rediscovery of the historical Jesus mean for the heirs of the Christian tradition? Does this Jesus have any relevance for people who claim no allegiance to Christianity? Since the eighteenth century, the church and its critics have used Jesus to talk about the meaning of human existence, and ultimately about the nature of God. The presenters offer their insights and engage participants in a discussion about the relation of the historical Jesus to those questions.

Roy W. Hoover (Th.D., Harvard University) is Weyerhaeuser Professor of Biblical Literature and Professor of Religion Emeritus, Whitman College. He is co-author (with Robert W. Funk) of The Five Gospels: The Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus (1993) and editor of Profiles of Jesus (2003).
Arthur J. Dewey ( Th.D., Harvard University) is Professor of Theology, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio and co-founder of the Healing Deadly Memories Program, a unique project that conducts workshops on how to deal with the question of anti-Semitism in the New Testament.
