The Parables of Jesus
Bernard Brandon Scott & Hal Taussig
LECTURE
Bernard Brandon Scott
What is a Parable?
Lost for ages in the backwaters of allegory and simplistic preaching, the parables of Jesus have emerged in modern scholarship as the creation of a great artist. Brandon Scott will explore what parables are and how they differ from allegories. The parable of the Leaven will serve as the primary focus of the presentation.
Friday, 7:30-9 P.M.
WORKSHOPS
Hal Taussig & Brandon Scott
Jesus and the Parables He Taught
Hal Taussig and Brandon Scott will explore the various methods that have been used to interpret parables and look at a series of parables that go back to Jesus—the Good Samaritan, Prodigal Sons, Vineyard Laborers, and the Banquet, examining their meanings and the reasons they are attributed to Jesus himself.
Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-Noon
The Larger Message of Jesus
The kingdom of God is a key term in Jesus' parables. Taussig and Scott will suggest ways this concept and the parables connect to other sayings of Jesus, and tease out a portrait of Jesus' overall message.
Saturday, 1:30-4 P.M.
