The Parables of Jesus

Bernard Brandon Scott & Joanna Dewey

LECTURE

Bernard Brandon Scott
What is a Parable?
Lost for ages in the backwaters of allegory and simplistic preaching, the parables of Jesus have emerged in modern scholarship as the creation of a great artist. Brandon Scott will explore what parables are and how they differ from allegories. The parable of the Mustard Seed will serve as the primary focus of the presentation. Several Rabbinic parables as well as Jesus’ parable about Treasure will also come into play.

Friday, 7:30-9 P.M.

WORKSHOPS

Joanna Dewey
Jesus, Women, and the Parables
Four parables include women characters: the parables of the Leaven, the Lost Coin, the Stubborn Widow, and the Ten Maidens.  Joanna Dewey will explore the women in the parables and the women around Jesus in the context of first century roles of women and what the parables suggest about God and God’s kingdom.

Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-Noon

Joanna Dewey & Brandon Scott
Parables and the Kingdom
Jesus told parables as a way of explaining and helping his audience experience the kingdom of God. So parables are a door to the kingdom. But what explains what? Does the kingdom explain the parables or do the parables explain the kingdom? The parables of the Prodigal Son (or the parable of a dysfunctional family), the Samaritan and Leased Vineyard will provide a primary focus for this presentation.

Saturday, 1:30-4 P.M.
