Jesus in the First & Twenty-first Centuries Bernard Brandon Scott &
Daryl D. Schmidt LECTURE Bernard Brandon Scott From Nazareth to Nicea Who is the founder of Christianity: Jesus, Paul or the Roman Emperor Constantine? How did Jesus—a Galilean peasant, teller of parables, exorcist
and healer—become the royal Son of God celebrated in the creed of Nicea? Brandon Scott explores the role of Jesus in early Christianity and the struggle
of early Christians with and within the Roman Empire during the first three hundred years of the movement.
FRIDAY EVENING, 7:30–9 P.M. WORKSHOPS Jesus in the First Century
What do we know about the historical Jesus? This workshop will examine selected sayings of Jesus, showing why scholars consider them authentic and
suggesting surprising ways they might have been understood. In the process, they will introduce participants to the methods of modern scholarship used to
distinguish the words of the historical Jesus from those later attributed to him.
SATURDAY MORNING, 9:30 A.M.–NOON Jesus for the Twenty-first Century Can the historical Jesus revitalize or transform Christian faith? Does this Jesus
have any relevance for people who claim no allegiance to Christianity? Since the eighteenth century, the church and its critics have used Jesus to talk about
the meaning of human existence, and ultimately about the nature of God. The presenters offer their insights and engage participants in a discussion about the
relation of the historical Jesus to those questions. SATURDAY AFTERNOON, 1:30–4 P.M. Bernard Brandon Scott (Ph.D., Vanderbilt Unviversity) is the Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament at the Phillips Theological
Seminary, Tulsa, OK. He is the author of several books, including Hear Then the Parable (1989), Re-Imagine the World: An Introduction to the Parables of Jesus (2002) and Hollywood Dreams and Biblical Stories (1994). Daryl D. Schmidt
(Ph.D., Graduate Theological Union) is John F. Weatherly Professor of New Testament at Texas Christian University. A general editor of the Scholars Version translation project, he is the author of The Gospel of Mark: Scholars Bible edition (1991) and editor of Forum, the scholarly
magazine of Westar Institute. All events at:
